Lachen

Situated in the northern district of Sikkim at an altitude of 8500 ft, Lachen is alluring in its simplicity. Not yet as big a tourist destination as Lachung, it retains a freshness that is very appealing. The word Lachen means "big pass".

The town forms the base of the Chopta Valley and Gurudongmar Lake. A breathtaking mountain drive can be taken along the Tibetan plateau to Gurudongmar and Cho Lhamu as a day tour from Lachen. The sacred Gurudongmar lake at a height of 17,100 ft encircled by snowy massifs is the place to certainly give you an adrenaline rush.

The quaint Lachen village is known for its lush vegetation that contains mainly grasslands and shrubs along with apple orchards. Lachen valley has almost everything a traveler could wish for a land of fairs and festivals, snow-clad mountains, mpuntain lakes, flora, fauna, and vibrant local culture.

Seasons unfold timelessly in this high-altitude habitat; gaily painted with myriad flowers in the spring and monsoon, bathed in spectacular weather in autumn and snow-clad fairy-tale winters.
