The seaside town of Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, one of the holiest places in India and located on the beautiful Pamban Island, is noteworthy for being the place in India that's closest to neighboring Sri Lanka. According to Hindu mythology, this is the place where Lord Rama created a bridge across the sea to Sri Lanka. Lord Shiva too is worshipped in this place.

Rameswaram means "Lord of Rama", an epithet of Shiva, the presiding deity of the Ramanathaswamy Temple. Famed for its magnificent prakaras with massive sculptured pillars on either side, the Ramanathaswamy Temple houses the longest corridor in the world. The Five-faced Hanuman Temple holds the floating stone which was used to build the mythological bridge- Ram Sethu, between India and Sri Lanka.

Together with Varanasi, Rameshwaram is considered to be one of the holiest places in India to Hindus, and part of the Char Dham pilgrimage.
