Parmarth Niketan, literally "an abode dedicated to the welfare of all," sits directly on the banks of the Ganges in Rishikesh's Swarg Ashram area, near the iconic Ram Jhula. Founded in 1942 by Pujya Swami Shukdevanandji Maharaj and led since 1986 by H.H. Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji, it has grown into one of India's largest and most internationally recognised spiritual institutions.
The 8-acre campus is a world apart from the bustle of Rishikesh's market lanes. Shaded pathways wind through manicured gardens, past prayer halls and a herbal nursery, down to the ghat where the river flows wide and clean. Over 1,000 rooms offer accommodation ranging from simple spiritual simplicity to modern comfort, all within earshot of temple bells and the murmur of the Ganges.
The ashram is open to all, with no discrimination based on religion, nationality, caste, or gender. Whether you come for a single evening's Ganga Aarti or a month-long yoga immersion, Parmarth welcomes you the same way.
Every evening, as the sun drops behind the Himalayan foothills, hundreds gather on Parmarth Niketan's riverfront ghat for one of Rishikesh's most iconic experiences. Rows of oil lamps are lit, sacred mantras fill the air, and the river catches the light in shifting gold and amber. The Ganga Aarti here is not a performance; it is a shared act of devotion that transcends language, faith, and nationality. Pilgrims, travellers, sadhus, and families sit shoulder to shoulder on the stone steps, drawn together by the simple, ancient power of fire and water.
This nightly ceremony has become so celebrated that Pujya Swamiji has inspired the creation of similar Ganga Aarti traditions at ghats in Varanasi and other cities along the river, as part of a broader mission to protect the Ganges by transforming its banks into places of worship.
