Adding Leisure Days to a Business Trip to India: What Your Visa Allows, and What Fits in One, Two or Three Spare Days

What an Indian business visa allows for leisure days, and how to use one, two or three spare days after your meetings.

Yes, you can add leisure days to a business trip to India on a business visa, and we plan these extensions for executives as part of our corporate travel work. India's Ministry of Home Affairs states that a foreign national on any type of Indian visa, other than a Pakistani national, may also carry out the activities permitted under a Tourist Visa, so sightseeing after your meetings is allowed on an e-Business visa. The harder questions are practical: which day of the week your spare time falls on, and how far it reaches from Delhi, Mumbai or Bengaluru.

TL;DR

  1. Your business visa covers sightseeing. The Ministry of Home Affairs lets holders of any visa category do what a Tourist Visa permits. The reverse does not hold: an e-Tourist visa is not for meetings.
  2. The e-Business visa is valid for one year from grant, with multiple entries, and each continuous stay is capped at 180 days, per the official e-Visa portal.
  3. Check the weekday before you pick the trip. The Taj Mahal closes every Friday, Elephanta Caves close on Mondays and Ellora closes on Tuesdays.
  4. From Delhi, one spare day buys Agra by train; two buys a sunrise at the Taj; three buys Agra and Jaipur.
  5. From Mumbai, Elephanta fits half a day; Ellora needs a night away. From Bengaluru, Mysuru fits a day, and Kabini needs two nights.
  6. Your partner needs their own visa. On the e-Visa route, a partner travelling for leisure usually applies for the e-Tourist visa.

What does an Indian business visa allow after the meetings end?

The rule is in the Ministry of Home Affairs general visa guidelines: foreign nationals must adhere to the purpose they declared, but a foreign national coming to India on any type of visa will be allowed to avail activities permitted under a Tourist Visa. The one listed exception is Pakistani nationals. The Consulate General of India in Marseille publishes the same general permission for its applicants.

Tourist Visa activities are defined in the same Ministry guidelines as recreation, sightseeing, casual visits to friends or relatives and short yoga programmes. A weekend at the Taj Mahal after a week of supplier meetings in Delhi sits squarely inside that list.

The rule does not run the other way. An e-Tourist visa is for recreation and sightseeing, and business meetings belong on a business visa. Our US traveller's e-Visa guide covers the application mechanics, and our Gulf and Southeast Asia incentive guide covers choosing categories for a whole group.

Which business visa suits a US or UK executive?

Two routes cover most American and British executives, and the leisure rule applies to both.

  1. The e-Business visa (e-B1). The official e-Visa portal lists it as valid for 365 days from the date the Electronic Travel Authorisation is granted, with multiple entries and a continuous stay of no more than 180 days per visit. The official e-Visa portal asks you to apply at least four days before arrival and no more than 120 days ahead.
  2. The regular paper Business Visa. The Ministry of Home Affairs visa details allow a Business Visa of up to 10 years with multiple entries for citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and South Africa, again with continuous stays capped at 180 days. It suits people who travel to India several times a year.

The official e-Visa fee schedule, checked on 23 October 2026, lists the e-Business visa at US$140 for United States passport holders and US$242 for United Kingdom passport holders, plus a 3 per cent bank charge. The portal also states that the Government of India charges no emergency or express fee, so any site selling a "rush" e-Visa is a private intermediary. Separately, foreign travellers must submit the online e-Arrival card up to 72 hours before landing.

Why the day of the week decides the trip

The most common mistake with a spare day in India is the calendar, not the distance. Many business weeks end on a Friday, and Friday is the one day the Taj Mahal is shut. The official Taj Mahal website states it is closed every Friday and otherwise opens 30 minutes before sunrise.

The practical rule follows from the table. If your free day is a Friday, spend it in Delhi and see the Taj on Saturday. Mumbai's Elephanta works on any day except Monday, and a Mysuru trip is best timed for a Sunday, when the palace is lit from 7 pm to 8 pm.

From Delhi: what fits in one, two or three spare days?

The Red Fort

Delhi is the easiest base for a leisure extension, because Agra and Jaipur both sit within reach.

  1. One day: Agra by train. The Gatimaan Express leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin at 08:10 and reaches Agra Cantt at about 09:50, and our team plans Delhi to Agra at two hours by train against four by road. That leaves a full day for the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort and a return the same evening. Foreign visitors pay ₹1,100 for Taj entry, plus ₹200 to enter the main mausoleum, and tickets are sold online.
  2. Two days: Agra with a sunrise. One night is enough for Agra, which is how we plan it for most clients. We book The Oberoi Amarvilas or ITC Mughal, so the Taj can be seen at opening, 30 minutes before sunrise.
  3. Three days: Agra and Jaipur. Agra to Jaipur is about six hours by road, and Jaipur to Delhi is a flight of about an hour on IndiGo's schedule. Our10-day Golden Triangle route sets out the full drive times.

If the spare day is a Friday and you only have one, stay in the city. Humayun's Tomb, Old Delhi and Qutub Minar fill a day, and our Delhi guide covers the city's main sights.

From Mumbai: what fits in one, two or three spare days?

Mumbai has World Heritage Sites in the city and in the harbour at Elephanta, and two more a short flight away.

  1. One day: Elephanta Caves. Ferries run from the Gateway of India, and the Archaeological Survey of India opens the caves from 9 am to 5 pm, closed on Mondays. Allow half a day for the crossing and the caves, which leaves the rest of the day for the Fort district.
  2. Two days: Ellora. The flight to Aurangabad (Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar) takes about an hour, and Ellora opens from sunrise to sunset every day except Tuesday. We use Welcomhotel by ITC for the night.
  3. Three days: Ajanta and Ellora, or a change of pace. Ajanta closes on Mondays, so a pairing with Ellora needs a Wednesday to Sunday window. The alternative is a short flight to Udaipur for the Taj Lake Palace or Goa for Taj Exotica.

From Bengaluru: what fits in one, two or three spare days?

Bengaluru is where the meetings happen; for most visitors, the leisure time goes south to Mysuru.

  1. One day: Mysuru. The 118 km Bengaluru to Mysuru expressway cut the run between the two cities to about 75 minutes, against about three hours before, according to Business Today. Clearing Bengaluru traffic is the slow part. Mysuru Palace is open daily from 10:00 to 17:30.
  2. Two days: Mysuru overnight, timed for Sunday. The Mysuru Palace Board lights the palace from 7 pm to 8 pm on Sundays and public holidays, so a Sunday night stay at Radisson Blu Plaza or Royal Orchid Metropole catches it.
  3. Three days: Mysuru and Kabini. Jungle Lodges places Kabini 223 km from Bengaluru and 73 km from Mysuru, which makes Mysuru the natural halfway night. We book Evolve Back or The Serai Kabini for the forest stay.

How Bout India plans a leisure extension

We are Bout India, a Jaipur-based luxury tour operator founded in 2013, and our first piece of advice to executives is simple. Plan the leisure days before the flights are booked, not after the meetings end. The return flight decides everything: a Delhi departure late on Sunday makes the Agra and Jaipur loop possible, while a Saturday morning flight limits you to a day in the city.

We work to three rules. Road journeys over eight or nine hours become flights. Plains transfers are planned 30 to 40 minutes longer than the map estimate. And the leisure portion is quoted separately from anything your company books, so expenses stay clean. Our month-by-month calendar shows which regions suit your dates, and our 2026 cost bands show what each tier costs per day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. The Ministry of Home Affairs general visa guidelines state that a foreign national coming to India on any type of visa, other than a Pakistani national, may avail the activities permitted under a Tourist Visa. Those activities are recreation, sightseeing, casual visits to friends or relatives and short yoga programmes. You still need to declare your main purpose truthfully when you apply, which for a business trip means the e-Business visa or a regular Business Visa. The Consulate General of India in Marseille publishes the same general permission for its applicants.

  • No. The e-Tourist visa is issued for recreation, sightseeing, visits to friends or relatives and short yoga programmes, and the Ministry of Home Affairs requires travellers to adhere to the purpose they declared. Meetings, supplier visits, trade fairs and sales work belong on a business visa. The permission runs one way only: a business visa covers tourist activities, but a tourist visa does not cover business.

  • The official e-Visa fee schedule, checked on 23 October 2026, lists the e-Business visa at US$140 for United States passport holders and US$242 for United Kingdom passport holders, plus a 3 per cent bank charge. Fees are set by passport nationality, not by where you live, so a British citizen based in New York pays the British rate. The portal states that the Government of India charges no emergency or express fee. Recheck the schedule on the day you apply, because it changes.

  • Not on your visa. Under the Ministry of Home Affairs visa details, family members of a regular Business Visa holder can be granted a visa of their own. On the e-Visa route, a partner who is travelling purely for leisure applies separately, and the e-Tourist visa is the usual fit. The e-Tourist visa comes in 30-day, one-year and five-year versions on the official portal.

  • Yes, if the day is not a Friday. The Gatimaan Express leaves Hazrat Nizamuddin at 08:10 and reaches Agra Cantt at about 09:50, and it does not run on Fridays, which is also the day the Taj Mahal closes. That gives a full day at the Taj and Agra Fort with a same-evening return. With a second day, stay overnight in Agra and see the Taj at the opening, 30 minutes before sunrise.

  • The official e-Visa portal lists the e-Business visa as valid for one year from the date of grant, with multiple entries, and each continuous stay capped at 180 days. Anyone planning to stay beyond 180 days must register with the relevant Foreigners Regional Registration Office within two weeks of the 180 days ending. A leisure extension of a few days sits well within these limits.
