Somatheeram Ayurveda Village

Perched on a lush, terraced hillside above Chowara Beach, about 9 kilometres south of the famous Kovalam lighthouse, Somatheeram Ayurveda Village is far more than a beachfront resort. Founded in 1985 by Baby Mathew, it pioneered the concept of an Ayurveda hospital set within a resort ambiance, making traditional Indian healing accessible and comfortable for guests from across the world.

Spread across 15 acres of tropical gardens, the property is a quiet world of coconut palms, flowering trees, herbal gardens, and winding paths that descend gently toward the sea. Traditional Kerala-style cottages and wooden houses dot the hillside, designed to blend with the landscape rather than impose upon it. The sound of waves is a constant companion, and the air carries the faint warmth of medicinal oils from the treatment rooms below.

What makes Somatheeram genuinely distinctive is that healing is not an amenity here; it is the entire purpose. Every stay begins with a detailed consultation with one of the resort's Ayurvedic physicians, who assess your constitution (prakriti), current imbalances, and health goals before prescribing a personalised treatment plan. The meals, the therapies, the yoga sessions, and even the daily routine are all calibrated to support that plan.

Every treatment at Somatheeram follows the classical principles of Ayurveda not a diluted spa version but authentic, doctor-supervised therapy using time-tested techniques and herbal preparations. Programmes typically run for 7, 14, or 21 days, with daily treatments spanning approximately three hours across morning and afternoon sessions.
