Periyar/Thekkady

Periyar is an important tourist destination in Kerala State. It is mostly famous for its national park, home to mainly elephants and tigers along with gaur, sambar, Indian giant squirrel, Nilgiri langur, endangered lion-tailed macaque, and many others.

Periyar is a peaceful place with a serene environmental condition, healthy air, picturesque manmade Periyar Lake at the heart of the national park, Chellar Kovil with its churches, beautiful waterfalls and cascades, and famous ancient temple of Mangala Devi of the ninth century. Murikkady located nearby Periyar is also a must-watch place with a beautiful panorama of cardamom, pepper, tea, and coffee plantations. The Idukki Dam, one of the highest Arch dams in Asia, is constructed on the Periyar River between two mountains. This dam was constructed along with two more dams making an artificial lake in between.

An early morning nature walks inside the Periyar National Park along with bamboo rafting on the Periyar Lake is a very unique and desirable experience. 

Thekkady is a town near Periyar National Park, where tourists stay when they come to visit Periyar. There are lots of excellent resorts and hotels in Thekkady where travelers can find a peaceful environment in plush nature.
