Golden Triangle and Rajasthan in 10 Days: The Route, the Real Drive Times, and the Hotels We Book

A nine-night Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur route with a flight home on day 10. It covers the real drive times, the Taj Mahal Friday closure, 2026

Ten days cover Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur if you run the loop one way and fly the last leg home. The structure is nine nights: Delhi 2, Agra 1, Jaipur 2, Jodhpur 2, Udaipur 2, then a flight from Udaipur to Delhi on day 10. Roughly 1,085 km of driving. The rule that breaks more of these itineraries than anything else is that the Taj Mahal closes to sightseeing every Friday, and in the 2026-27 season both Christmas Day and New Year's Day are Fridays.

TL;DR

  1. Nine nights, one direction. Delhi 2, Agra 1, Jaipur 2, Jodhpur 2, Udaipur 2, fly out on day 10.
  2. The Taj is shut every Friday: no ticket type, no afternoon slot, no exception.
  3. 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027 are both Fridays. Plan Agra around them or lose the monument.
  4. Jodhpur to Udaipur is the longest day in the car, not Jaipur to Jodhpur. Leave by 8 am.
  5. Foreigner Taj entry is ₹1,100, plus ₹200 to enter the mausoleum itself. Budget both.
  6. The ₹500 ADA component covers five Agra monuments the same day, so Agra Fort that afternoon costs only its own entry.
  7. Day 10 flies because Udaipur to Delhi is 660 km. Road journeys over eight or nine hours become flights.
  8. Avoid 20 December to 10 January unless booked a year out: rates run 25 to 40 per cent higher and availability goes. Christmas and New Year week is also a non-refundable blackout under our terms.

We run this as our Golden Triangle and Bequest Rajasthan itinerary. The numbers below are operating figures, not brochure figures.

The Nine-Night Structure

Movement

1 to 2 Delhi 2 Arrival, Rashtrapati Bhavan, India Gate, Humayun's Tomb, Jama Masjid, Chandni Chowk by rickshaw, Qutub Minar
3 Agra 1 Drive from Delhi, Taj Mahal, Agra Fort
4 to 5 Jaipur 2 Sunrise Taj, drive via Chand Baori, Amer Fort, City Palace, Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar
6 to 7 Jodhpur 2 Drive from Jaipur, Mehrangarh, Jaswant Thada, blue city at sunset
8 to 9 Udaipur 2

Drive via Ranakpur, City Palace, Lake Pichola

10 Departure 0 Flight Udaipur to Delhi

The route runs one way because Delhi to Agra to Jaipur to Jodhpur to Udaipur moves consistently south and west, so no road is repeated. Reversing it puts the Taj on day eight, when jet lag has cleared, but the odds of hitting a Friday have not improved.

The Real Drive Times

Open Road

Our operating rule is that plains transfers run 30 to 40 minutes beyond the mapped estimate, while Himalayan routes can more than double. This route is entirely plains and desert, so the variance is predictable. What mapping apps miss is not traffic; it is stops.

Leg

Approx. distance

Realistic door-to-door

Delhi to Agra 230 km 4 hours
Agra to Jaipur via Chand Baori 260 km 6 hours with the stepwell
Jaipur to Jodhpur 335 km 6 hours
Jodhpur to Udaipur via Ranakpur 260 km 7 hours with the temple
Udaipur to Delhi Flight 1 h 30 airborne

Delhi to Agra is the fastest leg because of the Yamuna Expressway, a 165.5 km six-lane access-controlled road from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida to Kuberpur on NH 19. City traffic at both ends turns that into a four-hour door-to-door transfer.

Jodhpur to Udaipur is the leg travellers get wrong. On paper, it is shorter than Jaipur to Jodhpur. In practice, the Ranakpur Jain temple stop, the Aravalli road and lunch make it the longest day in the car. Leave by 8 am.

The Friday Rule, and the 2026-27 Problem

The Taj Mahal

The Taj Mahal is closed to visitors every Friday, opening only for prayer in the mosque between 12 noon and 2 pm. Standard hours are sunrise to sunset. Night viewing runs on the full moon date plus two days either side, excluding Fridays and the month of Ramzan.

This season the rule bites twice, on the two dates people most want. Christmas Day 2026 falls on Friday 25 December, and New Year's Day 2027 on Friday 1 January. Anyone building a Golden Triangle around either date cannot see the Taj on the day itself. Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Itimad-ud-Daulah, Mehtab Bagh and Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra all stay open on Fridays, so Agra still works as a Friday city provided the Taj is scheduled for the day before or after.

That is why our itinerary puts one night in Agra with the Taj visited twice, on the arrival afternoon and the following sunrise: two attempts, one night, no wasted day. If your Agra night lands on a Thursday, you lose the Friday morning slot, and the whole ten-day sequence has to shift.

Tickets and Entry Fees

Taj Mahal in Morning

Foreign visitors pay ₹1,100 for Taj Mahal entry, made up of a ₹600 ASI component (₹550 online) and a ₹500 Agra Development Authority toll-tax ticket. Entry to the main mausoleum requires a separate ₹200 ticket on top of that. Budget ₹1,300 per foreign adult if you want to go inside the tomb chamber, which most people do.

The ₹500 ADA component is the quietly generous part: it covers you at the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's Tomb and Itimad-ud-Daulah's tomb on the same day, so Agra Fort that afternoon costs only its own entry component. Children under 15 enter the Taj free. Audio guides are available in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Bangla.

The Hotels We Book, City by City

Umaid Bhavan

We maintain a ranked preferred-property list across 48 Indian destinations. Everything below sits on it.

Delhi. The Imperial for the colonial address on Janpath; The Oberoi and The Leela Palace for contemporary luxury; The Claridges and Taj Palace as strong alternatives; The Manor when small suits better than large.

Agra. The Oberoi Amarvilas if budget allows, because every room faces the Taj and it sits on Taj East Gate Road, 600 metres from the Taj. ITC Mughal and Taj Agra are the tier below, with Trident and Courtyard by Marriott at a comfort level.

Jaipur. Rambagh Palace, once the principal residence of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II, is the flagship. The Oberoi Rajvilas sits outside the city on garden grounds. Samode Haveli earns its place for its proximity to sightseeing, and Shahpura House, a royal family residence, is the strongest comfort-tier heritage option.  Taj Jai Mahal Palace, The Raj Palace, Royal Heritage Haveli and Raffles Jaipur complete the list.

Jodhpur. Umaid Bhawan Palace, one of the world's largest private residences, is split between the royal family's working home, a museum and the hotel. RAAS Jodhpur sits at the foot of Mehrangarh. Ajit Bhawan, Taj Hari Mahal, Ratan Vilas and Welcomheritage Balsamand Palace cover the tiers below.

Udaipur. Taj Lake Palace, on its own island in Lake Pichola, is why many people book this route. The Oberoi Udaivilas and The Leela Palace Udaipur are the lakeshore alternatives, with Taj Fateh Prakash inside the City Palace complex, and Trident, Lake Pichola Hotel and The Experience Resort at comfort level.

One constraint worth knowing before you fall for a specific property: a palace seats far more people for dinner than it can put to bed. Rambagh handles events up to 800 and has 78 rooms.

Why Day 10 Flies

Udaipur Skyline

Udaipur to Delhi by road is roughly 660 km and a full day behind the wheel. Our operating rule is that road journeys over eight or nine hours become flights, and this clears that comfortably.

The itinerary includes an economy ticket on the Udaipur to Delhi sector with 15 kg checked baggage. Book your international departure no earlier than late evening: the domestic connection needs a buffer and Delhi terminal transfers are not quick.

What Ten Days Cost

Two published bands, per person per day with two sharing. Comfort, a mix of four- and five-star, runs USD 100 to 150. Luxury, five-star only, runs USD 250 to 500 and upward.

A nine-night luxury version staying at Rambagh Palace, Umaid Bhawan and Taj Lake Palace sits at the top of that band, because those three properties are the price. Swapping to Samode Haveli, Ajit Bhawan and Taj Fateh Prakash moves the same route materially down without changing a single monument.

Included: accommodation, the Udaipur to Delhi flight, private vehicle with driver including tolls, parking, and driver allowances, licensed English-speaking guides, all monument entry fees, local taxes, and a defined number of meals. Excluded: international flights, visas, insurance and tipping. Terms are on our booking and cancellation policy page.

If You Have 12 or 14 Days

Extend west rather than adding a sixth city to the same loop. Jaisalmer is the strongest addition from Jodhpur, with Suryagarh, Sujan The Serai and Taj Gorbandh Palace. Bikaner works as a northern extension with Narendra Bhawan. Mandawa and its painted havelis fit between Delhi and Jaipur, with Gulab Haveli by IHCL.

One planning constraint: between 20 December and 10 January, quality hotels and guides in Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer sell out, and festival pricing runs roughly 25 to 40 per cent above normal. Blackout cancellation terms apply to Christmas and New Year week. Our month-by-month calendar and winter planning guide cover the alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes, for five cities, if you fly the final leg. Ten days gives two nights each in Delhi, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur and one in Agra, which is the correct allocation. Our general rule is two nights per location, with one night sufficient in Agra because the Taj and Agra Fort cover an afternoon and the following sunrise. Adding Jaisalmer or Ranthambore inside ten days means cutting somewhere to a single night, and single nights in Jodhpur or Udaipur waste the drive that got you there.

  • You cannot see the Taj Mahal that day. It closes to sightseeing every Friday, with the mosque open only for prayer between 12 noon and 2 pm, and no ticket type or afternoon slot changes that. This matters unusually in the 2026-27 season, because both 25 December 2026 and 1 January 2027 are Fridays. The fix is to shift your India arrival by one day, which is far easier than resequencing five cities. Any operator who doesn't raise this before confirming dates hasn't checked the calendar against your itinerary.

  • ₹1,100 for entry to the complex, comprising a ₹600 ASI component (₹550 if booked online) and a ₹500 Agra Development Authority toll-tax ticket. Entering the main mausoleum requires an additional ₹200 ticket, so budget ₹1,300 per adult to see the tomb chamber. The ₹500 ADA component is valid the same day at Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's Tomb and Itimad-ud-Daulah, so a second Agra monument that afternoon costs only its own entry. Children under 15 enter free.

  • Drive within Rajasthan, fly the return to Delhi. Each leg takes four to seven hours, keeping you on the road where the landscape and roadside stops are part of the trip. We switch to flights when a road journey would take more than eight or nine hours, which is why Udaipur to Delhi is flown at roughly 660 km. Trains suit scenic legs up to six or seven hours and work better on the Delhi to Agra sector than in the Rajasthan interior.

  • The Oberoi Amarvilas, if the budget allows, because it promises a Taj view from every room rather than some, and its position near the East Gate cuts the pre-sunrise transfer to a few minutes. That matters more than it sounds when you are leaving at 5.30 am. If the price is not justifiable for one night, ITC Mughal and Taj Agra are the tier below, with Trident and Courtyard by Marriott at the same comfort level. Given a single Agra night, spending up here has a shorter payback than spending up in Delhi.

  • October to March, with December and January at peak for both weather and price. February and early March are the sweet spot: dry weather, less pressure on availability than the 20 December to 10 January squeeze, and none of the blackout terms that apply over Christmas and New Year's week. April to September is soft, with June the weakest, because Rajasthan heat makes fort sightseeing genuinely difficult. If your dates are locked to summer, this is the wrong route.
