The nine-night structure, day by day

The route runs one way for a reason. Delhi to Agra to Jaipur to Jodhpur to Udaipur moves consistently south and west, so you never repeat a road. Reversing it means arriving at the Taj Mahal on day eight, when jet lag has worn off but the odds of hitting a Friday have not improved.

The real drive times

Bout India's operational rule is that transfers in the plains typically run 30 to 40 minutes beyond the mapped estimate, while Himalayan routes can more than double. This route is entirely plains and desert, so the variance is predictable. What mapping apps miss is not traffic; it is stops.

Delhi to Agra is the fastest leg because of the Yamuna Expressway, a 165.5-kilometre, six-lane, access-controlled road running from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida to Kuberpur on NH-2 at Agra, as confirmed by the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority. City traffic at both ends is what turns a 165-kilometre expressway run into a four-hour door-to-door transfer.

The Jodhpur to Udaipur leg is the one travellers consistently get wrong. On paper it is shorter than Jaipur to Jodhpur. In practice, the Ranakpur Jain temple stop, the Aravalli road, and a lunch break make it the longest day in the car. Leave by 8 am.

The Friday rule that breaks itineraries

The Archaeological Survey of India states plainly that the Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays, opening only for traditional prayer in the mosque between 12 noon and 2 pm. Standard hours are sunrise to sunset. Night viewing runs on the full moon date plus the two days either side, excluding Fridays and the month of Ramzan.

That is why the itinerary includes one night in Agra, with the Taj visited both the afternoon of arrival and the following sunrise: two attempts, one night, no wasted day. If your Agra night falls on a Thursday, you lose the Friday morning slot entirely, which means the entire ten-day sequence has to shift.

On tickets, the ASI structure is worth understanding because it is quietly generous. Foreign visitors pay an ASI component of Rs 600 in cash or Rs 550 online, plus an Agra Development Authority toll-tax ticket of Rs 500. That Rs 500 toll ticket covers you at the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's Tomb and Itimad-ud-Daulah's tomb on the same day, so seeing Agra Fort the same afternoon costs you only its own entry component. Why day 10 flies rather than drives

Udaipur to Delhi by road is roughly 660 kilometres and a full day behind the wheel. Bout India's operating rule is that road journeys exceeding eight or nine hours become flights, and this one clears that threshold comfortably.

The itinerary includes an economy ticket on the Udaipur to Delhi sector with a 15kg checked baggage allowance. Book an international departure no earlier than late evening, because the domestic connection needs a buffer and Delhi airport transfers between terminals are not quick.

Given one night in Agra, spending up here has a shorter payback than spending up in Delhi.

When is the best time to run this route?

October to March is the main season, with December and January at peak for both weather and price. February and March are the sweet spot, offering dry weather with slightly less pressure on hotel availability than the Christmas and New Year window. April to September is soft, with June the lowest, because Rajasthan heat makes fort sightseeing genuinely difficult.
