Varkala

Perched along the edge of majestic 15m-high red laterite cliffs, 50 km northwest of Trivandrum, Varkala has a naturally beautiful setting that has allowed it to steadily grow into one of the Kerala's most popular beach destination. Varkala is the only place in Kerala where cliffs are found adjacent to the Arabian Sea. These cliffs are a unique geological feature on the otherwise flat Kerala coast, and are known among geologists as Varkala Formation. The cliffs have been declared a national geological monument by the Geological Survey of India for their protection, maintenance and promotion of geotourism. There are numerous natural water spouts and spas on the sides of these cliffs.

Varkala is also famous for the 2,018-year-old Janardana Swami Temple (AKA Dakshin Kashi). With some of the best pristine beaches, hills, lakes, forts, lighthouses, natural fisheries and springs, all of this together makes Varkala a little paradise. You will also find a lot of shops selling Yoga mats, oxidised silver jewellery and harem pants made of cotton. Ayurvedic spas, Yoga centers, affordable resorts, clean beaches make it a very desirable destination of Kerala.
